Marina Amaral Photograph of Solidiers

Historical images have been brought alive with the addition of colour – removing the psychological disconnection between the modern day and our black and white past.

21 year old Brazilian artist, Marina Amaral, couples a passion for history with advanced Photoshop skills. With light and colour Amaral breathes life and personality into old photographs – closing the gap between the present day and the historical events she tackles.

The pictures are truly awesome, the colouring process allows them to totally confuse our brains! For example, this image could be from a top end fashion shoot … until you glance down and see the shackled wrists. Google the man in the portrait – Lewis Powell – and you’ll see the picture was taken in 1865!

Colour means that the emotions expressed feel so real – they’re a testimony to the human spirit. Wars come and go, technology evolves, life changes, but human interaction is timeless.
